Growth

Tree growth and stand yield may be described by yield tables and growth models. Site index and class are important to determine because growth and yield depend on site.

CACTOS stands for the California Conifer Timber Output Simulator. CRYPTOS is a growth simulator for the redwood and coastal Douglas-fir region. Both programs were developed by a cooperative of redwood landowners (including JDSF) at the University of California, Berkeley. For more information on CACTOS and CRYPTOS, please visit UC Berkeley Emeritus Professor, Lee C. Wensel's website.

Growth Simulators

Growth simulation systems are computer programs that predict forest growth. Inventory data is usually input to the simulator although some software will generate data from summary information. Growth models may predict either individual tree or whole stand growth. Many simulators also predict background mortality. The links below are to free growth simulation programs for California or neighboring areas. We also provide information for the CACTOS (mixed conifer) and CRYPTOS (redwood/Douglas-fir) systems.
